On Saturday 4th April, the Castle Hill Community Centre and Gardens became the beating heart of Torrington. What started as a simple idea to bring people together, celebrate local talent, and raise funds for the Black Horse Big Build, blossomed into a full‑blown community festival that none of us will forget.
In the days leading up to the event, the excitement was already bubbling. We’d promised “the best Saturday of the year,” and by the time the gates opened at 1pm, it was clear the community was ready to make that promise a reality. Families arrived, neighbours gathered in groups, and the gardens filled with the unmistakable buzz of a town coming together for something bigger than a gig.
A Line‑Up That Gave Everything for the Cause
The musicians didn’t just perform—they donated their time, talent, and energy to help bring the Black Horse one step closer to reopening. Ange & Holler kicked things off with warmth and soul, followed by the vibrant rhythms of Calypso Jack. The open mic session at 4pm turned into a joyful showcase of local creativity, with performers of all ages stepping up to be part of the story.
As the afternoon rolled into evening, Sheeple, Feelgood Inc, and Amanita Grove took the stage, each delivering unforgettable sets that had the crowd dancing, cheering, and soaking up every moment. These five bands didn’t only entertain—they stood shoulder to shoulder with the community, playing for the future of the Black Horse. Their generosity, including Sheeple’s cash donation, was a powerful reminder of how deeply the Big Build mission resonates in the area.
More Than Music: A True Community Celebration
The gig wasn’t just about the music; It was a full‑on family day, packed with activities and treats:
The Volunteers Who Made It Happen
Behind the scenes, an army of local legends worked tirelessly to bring the day to life. From Suzi on the BBQ, and Jo & Ange whose vision sparked the whole event, to Ian’s professional PA setup, and Leighroy’s brilliant bar; From the cake bakers and balloon modellers to the caretakers, advertisers, and everyone who gave their time; This gig was a testament to what Torrington can achieve when we pull together.
The volunteers' dedication really helped to make the event run smoothly—more than that, they made it shine.
A Fundraising Triumph
By the end of the night, the impact was clear. Together, the community raised an incredible £670.12 on the day, plus a generous £1000 donation and a further £300 pledge - bringing the town closer to reopening the Black Horse’s doors and restoring a vital piece of Torrington’s heritage.
And in true Torrington fashion, we were so busy enjoying the music and running the show that we didn’t even manage to get the donation buckets around! If you had a brilliant time and weren't approached for an entrance donation, please show your support & appreciation via the GoFundMe page - where every fiver helps keep the Big Build moving forward.
Why This Day Mattered
As the final notes faded and the raffle winners celebrated, one thing was unmistakable: this wasn’t just a fundraiser: It was a reminder of why the Big Build matters. The Black Horse isn’t just a pub—it’s a meeting place, a memory‑maker, a cornerstone of community life. And on April 4th, the people of Torrington showed how much they want it back.
To everyone who played, volunteered, danced, donated, baked, served, sang, or simply showed up—thank you. You’re part of the story now, and we can’t wait to welcome you through the doors of the Black Horse again soon.
